My son has a large pot full of sage and on my last visit I took a small cutting as sage will root easily. It’s a handy herb to use and companion planting sage will deter many pests and attract beneficial insects as well.
Companion Planting Sage
Sage deters cabbage white butterflies, flea beetles, and carrot root flies. Companion planting sage will benefit these plants:-
Broccoli and Sage
Plagued by cabbage white caterpillars, broccoli will benefit from the strong aroma from sage which will repel cabbage whites. As with all brassicas, broccoli is also susceptible to flea beetle damage and sage will keep these away too.
Cauliflower and Sage
Cabbage whites and flea beetles are a problem when growing cauliflowers. Growing sage as a companion plant will repel these pests.
Cabbage and Sage
Flea beetles and cabbage white caterpillars are a serious problem when growing cabbages. The strong scent from sage keeps these pests away.
Carrots and Sage
Grow sage around your carrot patch to deter carrot root flies from laying their eggs amongst your carrots. Once the eggs hatch the larvae will render your carrots inedible so prevention is better than cure. For more on companion planting carrots click here.
Grapes and Sage
Growing sage around your grapevines is said to improve the overall health of the vines. It’s latin name is a derivitive of the word to heal which makes it a beneficial plant to grow with many plants. To find out more about companion planting grapes click here.
Rosemary and Sage
Growing rosemary and sage together gives a boost to both plants. They are both mediterranean plants and are happy with less water than some other plants. For more on companion planting rosemary click here.
Lavender and Sage
Another mediterranean herb, lavender and sage will grow well together and attract many beneficial insects. Unfortunately they are both susceptible to frog hoppers so be on the look out for “cuckoo spit”. To remove this just spray with a high power water jet.
What Not To Grow With Sage
Sage attracts many insects and unfortunately not all of them are beneficial so keep sage away from:-
Cucumbers
Sadly the flavour of cucumbers can be adversely affected by strongly scented herbs like sage. If that wasn’t enough, sage also attracts insects that will feast on cucumber leaves.
Onions
Although commonly used together in cooking, sage and onions don’t mix in the garden. Sage has a detrimental effect on onions so keep them welll away from each other.
Rue
Another herb that has many benefits in the garden as a companion plant, sadly not sage. Rue exudes a chemical through it’s roots that will inhibit the growth of sage. If you want to grow these together place them in separate pots.
