Companion Planting Nettles
Nettles spread so rapidly due to their quick growing root system but if kept under control, they can be a worthwhile addition to the vegetable patch.
Why Grow Nettles ?
Many beneficial insects are attracted to a patch of stinging nettles including :-
- Ladybirds
- Bees
- Butterflies (Particularly the Red Admiral, Small Tortoiseshell, Peacock and the Comma)
The Bees and Butterflies will help greatly with pollination and the Ladybirds larvae will certainly keep the Aphid population under control.
The more insects attracted to your patch, the more birds will visit as well thus helping to keep slug numbers down. Birds also eat nettle seeds, just another reason to companion plant with a small nettle patch.
Nettle Spray
Using the same principles as comfrey tea, collect nettle leaves and allow them to ferment or rot in a bucket of water. strain this liquid and use as a spray to dissuade aphids from your vulnerable crops.
Crops like Beans, Tomatoes or even Roses will all benefit from a nettle spray to repel aphids.
Using the same liquid but added to some comfrey tea makes a superbly powerful organic plant food for free.
Benefits Of Nettles
Nettles are rich in silica, magnesium, iron and calcium which invigorate plants and increases their resistance to disease.
