Theory is fine but you can’t beat getting your hands dirty. I have found that the best way to learn anything is to do it, not read about it or talk about it. So with that in mind just have a go whether you just want to plant a few pots up or you want to fill a plot the size of a football pitch you have to start somewhere. I am trying to cover the basics here but the best way to learn is to do. So just start small and after you have harvested your first organically grown vegetable you will realise just how much flavour you have been missing out on.
The Big Garden
I was referred to the Big Garden community garden in Colchester in 2013. This project was set up in 2006 and has developed into a thriving hub of activity throughout the year. Not only did I put my theory into practise and learn new skills along the way, I also made a shed load of new friends. After my referral period was over I signed up as a volunteer, I now go every week (health permitting) and I have found that not only have my skills improved but also my general out look on life.
If you are in North East Essex and are interested in coming along the Big Garden website address is http://www.colchester.gov.uk/biggarden and I am sure you will be given a warm welcome and every encouragement without any pressure, you can do as much or as little as you are able.
If you are not in this area then search online for similar projects in your area, I promise you the benefits are immense, and community gardens are springing up in many areas.
